Enhancing the Value of ISP

The Town of Islip is planning to connect the airline terminal – either on the south side or north side of the airfield – to the adjacent Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).

This terminal and rail integration opportunity will provide direct pedestrian access to the Long Island Rail Road’s Ronkonkoma Station, the second busiest station in the system. With recent upgrades in the rail line, there will be regular trains with 30-minute headway, to Penn Station and Grand Central Station in Manhattan. Travel will take less than an hour to midtown Manhattan.

The terminal will accommodate growth for the foreseeable future with room for considerable gate growth. Surrounding communities will directly benefit from construction jobs and convenient transit and highway access.

The terminal will require no new property acquisition and no disturbance of new land - thereby minimizing environmental impacts. No changes will be made in runway usage or other operations that could produce adverse environmental impacts.

Available capacity

Long Island MacArthur Airport has available capacity – the only airport in the New York metropolitan region that has significant available growth capacity. At a time when the other airports – LGA, JFK, EWR and HPN all face serious capacity shortages, ISP is an extraordinary facility that can relieve some of the metropolitan area demand.

Direct and convenient access

For decades, regional leaders and airport sponsors throughout the New York metropolitan area have planned for and considered the importance of direct one-seat rail-to-plane connections to Manhattan and other key employment centers. The Port Authority of New York – New Jersey has spent decades planning for such service, but convenient rail access remains only a long-range possibility.

Terminal and rail integration at ISP will allow the airport to be the first and only regional airport with direct one-seat plane-to-train access to both Grand Central and Penn Stations in Manhattan as well as numerous Long Island employment centers.

An Opportunity for Investment

Passengers

A population of 2.8 million and recent investments mean ISP is dramatically more convenient for millions of potential passengers who already have access to the railroad.

Rail Access

Direct rail access from Ronkonkoma Station to Grand Central Station and Penn Station for the first time and a one seat ride to NYC every 30 minutes. This has long been a goal of all air transportation planners in the NY area.

Market Share

ISP will be able to capture a larger market share from passengers in Manhattan who do not have ready access to private automobiles.

An Attractive Alternative

ISP is an attractive alternate to JFK, LGA, HPN, and EWR that are all constrained by lengthy road travel times for millions of potential passengers. None of these other airports have convenient one-seat train-to-plane connectivity.

Low-cost Structure

ISP has by far the lowest cost-per-enplaned-passenger (CPE) in the region – less than half that at other regional airports. There is enormous demand in the New York metropolitan area for an airport facility with an affordable CPE to accommodate ULCCs in particular.

Better Customer Experience

ISP has a convenient terminal now. Either option, renovating the existing terminal or building a new one, will improve the customer experience by providing a modern, convenient facility with plenty of space for passengers and room for the airport to further expand flights, as well providing a direct connection to the Ronkonkma LIRR Station.
